Joe Biden points out that U.S. President Trump’s refusal to wear masks caused him to acquire the COVID-19 virus. Trump bears the responsibility of not wearing masks around others.
Before Trump had acquired the virus, he mocked the former vice president about his frequency in wearing masks during the first presidential debate. Biden was not surprised by the news that the president was infected since Trump’s nature of not wearing masks was already a huge risk factor to the virus.
The safety procedures of the Biden campaign have been somewhat different from Trump’s strategy. Biden is routinely tested and only held small events, where reporters and others are checked numerous times and expected to distance themselves. As Biden talked to the media at an airport on Monday, he was pulled back by his wife, Jill, to ensure that he remained six feet apart.
Trump also made fun of Biden for noticing social distance at small-scale campaign activities and denied that public health had been endangered by the packed rallies he has organized lately to make himself feel loved. The president’s contempt for mask-wearing has been one of the few constants in response to the pandemic that has now killed 210,000+ Americans.
In early April, when Trump himself confirmed that mask-wearing was suggested by the pandemic task force to slow the spread of coronavirus, he immediately made it clear that he had no intention of doing so. When asked why, Trump said he was worried about what he was going to look like, and said the pandemic would be over soon anyway.
Less than a week ago, Biden shared a conversation stage with Trump, but the two never shook hands and remained more than six feet apart. 77-year old Biden has tested negative since then, said he was not concerned about his safety but was upset to see Trump’s family and employees avoiding masks in the crowd.
Biden then stated that wearing masks does matter and is considered a patriotic duty. Anyone who does not abide by social distancing rules and refuses to wear masks bears the responsibility of what will happen to themselves and others.
To anyone who’s saying that they don’t wear masks because they’re not afraid should be afraid for their family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers. Wearing masks protects not only one’s self but for others as well.
People cannot refuse to wear masks and proceed to blame others if they do get infected. People should know that not wearing a mask makes a person extremely vulnerable to the virus.
