Obray Cowan’s talent as an artist and CEO is clearly demonstrated in his success with Dermal Designz, his tattoo studio located in Cornelius, NC. Early on, he started selling his art on t-shirts at concerts and other events. That slowly turned into in-store displays, gallery showings and a best-selling coloring book, all leading to the inception and growth of ArtByO.

Obray’s Artisanal Journey
Obray always had a creative and loving spirit. His grandmother could see it in him, and she sat him down and taught him to draw. “My grandma, she was actually the person who really started me off. I remember she showed me how to draw a small dog, and then from there, I just took off,” shared Obray.
From there, Obray expanded into recreating his favorite characters like wrestling personas and the guys and gals from the hit TV show Dragonball Z. As his talent progressed, he came to realize that his options were really unlimited; he unleashed himself and began building on ideas that popped into his head to create the emotionally stimulating works displayed today.
In the big picture, Obray has carefully planned his journey by relentlessly practicing his craft over the years, attending art and film school, as well as building the reputation of Dermal Designz, which aided in the launch of ArtByO in 2018. And on the day-to-day, he gets things done by being of service and helping people visualize their dreams, feel better and just be themselves.
Obray’s Process
His artistic process for the designs on ArtByO follows a bit of a different flow. Obray finds inspiration for his works from his experiences in the world around him. He sees the world as a beautiful place that is working to show itself every day. He finds beauty in everything and everyone he meets.
He practices mindfulness and meditation regularly to fully immerse himself in the vibrations of the universe. As Obray goes about his regular tasks, “little blips of inspiration, hunches or just straight up visions pop into my head. And then I have to get them out,” he explained. So he pulls out the sketchbook and at least gets a rough sketch down so he can come back and finish it later.
