Josh Pocock says he always knew he never wanted to work for anyone else. Josh was born and raised in Canada, to a single mother. But watching his mom and others work long hours in jobs they didn’t like convinced Josh he’d have to create a path of his own – he knew that working for someone else wouldn’t help him achieve what he wanted in life. So, while most of his high school buddies were still playing video games, Josh had already embarked on his own self-education, becoming a voracious reader and devouring everything he could find on entrepreneurship, success, and mindset.
Josh’s first foray into the world of business was as a commission-only door-to-door sales representative. He was a hard worker, pounding the pavement 10 hours a day – but for his entire first month, Josh never made a sale. Josh says he’ll never forget that first month, coming home each night exhausted and knowing he hadn’t earned a dime.
“It was tough. But I’d studied enough to know that I had to manage my own thinking. And that getting down on myself or becoming negative wasn’t going to help. I just kept moving forward each day – and when I finally made my first sale, it was like a dam had been released and the sales kept coming.”
Within a year, Josh was able to create a team of ace sales agents, and by 18, he’d become the top sales manager in the company. All the while, Josh continued to study and learn. He had a clear understanding of the importance of gathering knowledge, so regardless of how busy his day, he always made time to further his business education; Josh completed dozens of online courses and mentorship programs, which helped prepare him for his next step: Starting his own business.
