A recorded speech revealed from the White House on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump once again called for world leaders and the United Nations to push for making China accountable for their coverup of the coronavirus pandemic. He expressed his strong disagreement against the eastern superpower. Moreover, Trump blamed them for the lockdown restrictions on both the social and economic landscapes of society. He also pointed out how the World Health Organization is virtually controlled by the Chinese state and insists on pulling out U.S. support for the global organization.
Mike Pence, the vice president of the United States, has stated that if only China has been transparent about the outbreak early on, the country and the rest of the world would not have suffered such massive blows. COVID-19 was first cited to exist late last year in Wuhan, but the medical workers and scientists who knew of its existence were silenced and forbidden to speak up. It was only in January when the World Health Organization sounded the alarm for the severity of the virus. By then, the Wuhan province had already undergone a provincial lockdown. However, some citizens have already gone ahead to travel abroad, and with countries not prepared to welcome an influx of patients with the virus, the situation quickly became dire.
In May, health experts expressed their disappointment in the response of the United States to the pandemic. Testing failures have been rampant, as the country developed its kit only days after the first cases were spotted, and there was also widespread downplaying of the effects of the virus. Many dismissed COVID-19 to be “just like the common cold,” and the federal government itself failed to call for early lockdowns or to ban the entry of foreigners. Because of these, the U.S. became the world’s hotspot for virus spread, and the deaths recorded in the country accounted for the majority of worldwide death.
With the U.S. elections looming ahead, Trump also emphasized the ongoing vaccine trials that may lead the country into recovery, if it works effectively, and if the numbers are enough to be distributed to the masses immediately. The U.S. is developing its cure for the virus as it has pulled out of W.H.O. ‘s own vaccine efforts in further efforts to detach itself from the organization.
