Top U.S. department store Macy’s announced that it will offer same-day delivery to shoppers during the holiday season. The department store chain knew that Christmas is just around the corner and fast-approaching. And they have been preparing to cope with any shopping scenarios in the upcoming yuletide season.
COVID-19 has amplified the shift to online shopping, as more and more consumers are purchasing online. However, Macy’s executives see that the department store chain has an advantage come the holiday season.
Jeff Gennette, CEO of Macy’s, told in an interview that they are getting for any shopping scenarios when the holiday season starts. Gennette said that draw up options so their physical stores will have flexibility in dealing with the shopping conditions due to the pandemic.
Gift-Giving Lives On
Despite the pandemic, Gennette believed that the spirit of gift-giving during the holidays will endure and might be on a higher level this year. The coronavirus will make this year’s gift-giving more special.
The Macy’s top executive explained people even more yearn for a great gift that they can put under their Christmas trees or give to someone. Hence, the department store chain wants to ensure that they are prepared to meet its customers’ needs whenever they want to do their shopping.
Same-Day Delivery
Gennette revealed that their same-delivery offering is their most significant advantage. He explained that as an omnichannel retailer, Macy’s stores could deliver the items on the same day or send them a day before Christmas. He added that customers could also pick up their gifts in any of our stores through the curbside’s safety.
Gennette is convinced that the locations of their brick-and-mortar store provide an edge over their online competitors.
Learning from Digital Consumers
Gennette revealed that they had learned a lot from having an online presence. He described the first-time online shoppers as younger and more diverse and offered many insights on improving their service.
Genette said that they want to turn them into loyal customers; hence, they are trying to meet their needs. He said that they are investing in more personalized service and offer loyalty programs.
He said that their digital consumers want many delivery options, and they also want fast delivery. In response, Macy’s launched DoorDash, which offers shopped items delivery on the same day. DoorDash delivery is now available in 500 Macy’s stores nationwide.
Earlier, Macy’s reported it made many gains from its online presence. The company’s online sales in the second quarter of 2020 increased by 53% compared to the same period a year ago. In the same period, the company also got four million new customers online.
