Business success often stems from a blend of vision, strategic decision-making, and a constant focus on continuous growth. Anantharaj Appanan implemented this formula and transitioned from a legal scholar to a successful entrepreneur in telecommunications, business process outsourcing (BPO), and technology. His career reflects discipline, adaptability, and a keen understanding of market trends, making him a notable figure in Malaysia’s corporate sector.
Born in Malaysia, Appanan’s early academic qualifications revolved around legal frameworks and business regulations. He recognized the importance of legal literacy in commerce and undertook a foundational law program in Malaysia before continuing his studies in London, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons). His legal education equipped him with a sharp analytical mindset and an understanding of regulatory frameworks.
To bridge the gap between finance and corporate governance, Anantharaj pursued a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in Finance from Australia. This academic blend of law and finance provided him with the knowledge base to navigate complex business environments.
In 1997, Anantharaj took a leap of faith into Malaysia’s telecommunications industry, founding ‘Infohibur Komunikasi Sdn Bhd.’ At a time when digital communication was rapidly growing, his company introduced premium telephony services that quickly gained traction in the entertainment sector.
Infohibur Komunikasi’s approach to premium-rate phone services ranked it among the top names in Malaysia. Leveraging his market insight, Anantharaj expanded the company’s service portfolio through strategic partnerships and a strong understanding of consumer behavior, driving sustained growth in an increasingly competitive landscape. His efforts in entertainment-based telephony upscaled his reputation as an industry disruptor and made the way for his next business move.
With the telecommunications sector evolving and competition intensifying, Anantharaj attempted to diversify his business interests. In 2001, he acquired ‘Biz Suria Management,’ a business process outsourcing (BPO) and contact center company. Recognizing the rising global demand for outsourcing solutions, he transformed Biz Suria into a major player in the BPO sector. Biz Suria Management began offering specialized customer service, back-office operations, and multilingual support services.
Under his supervision, Biz Suria Management expanded its clientele across various industries, including finance, telecommunications, and e-commerce. By integrating technology with customer service solutions, he ensured that Biz Suria remained ahead of industry trends, solidifying its position as a trusted outsourcing partner in Malaysia and beyond.
Anantharaj’s most notable entrepreneurial venture came in 2019, when he co-founded Xanderia Berhad, an Islamic digital financial services company with a workforce of 200. As the principal co-founder and Group Chief Executive of Xanderia Group, he recognized the untapped potential in Shariah-compliant fintech solutions and developed a suite of financial products that adhered to Islamic banking principles while leveraging modern digital technologies.
He merged Islamic finance principles with cutting-edge digital solutions to position Xanderia Berhad as a unified service-providing company in Malaysia’s Islamic fintech sector, offering ethical and inclusive financial products. Anantharaj’s vision for financial inclusivity and technological integration positioned Xanderia as the most utilized service in the industry.
In 2021, Anantharaj expanded his impact beyond business by launching God’s Kitchen, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative under Xanderia Berhad. Dedicated to feeding the destitute and homeless across Malaysia, India, and Pakistan, this movement is built on the principle of unconditional love and service.
Each week, volunteers gather to distribute 200 packed meals, with over 300,000 food packs delivered across Chennai, Lahore, and Jakarta. As the initiative continued to grow, God’s Kitchen aims to connect with compassionate Individuals worldwide, fostering a community of giving that transcends borders.
His contributions across telecommunications, BPO, and leading technology have earned him various awards. His work in digital entertainment services earned him an Asian Television Award, and in 2024, he was honored with the Small and Medium Enterprises Business Award (SEBA) for his leadership in driving growth and innovation in Malaysia’s SME sector.
From legal studies to launching industry-shaping enterprises, Anantharaj’s career showcases strategic foresight, business understanding, and a passion for growth. His ability to adapt to shifting market dynamics while maintaining a customer-centric and ethically driven approach sets him apart in Malaysia’s corporate sector.
As Xanderia Berhad continues to expand its footprint in Islamic fintech, Anantharaj’s entrepreneurial growth continues to be an inspiration for aspiring business leaders.
