From Broken To Rediscovering His Edge
Recently I had the pleasure of chatting with Raul Villacis who is a serial entrepreneur, investor and coach. Villacis has had quite the journey and has built several highly successful businesses. He says that prior to the market crashing in 2008 he felt unstoppable and at the time his health and fitness were not a priority. He wasn’t even putting in 100% effort into his business and was making money right and left. But like many, Raul was caught off guard when the market crashed and he lost pretty much everything. He was in a really dark place and was having a lot of emotional pain and his health and fitness had taken a back seat. It was then that he turned to his wife and best friend and was reassured she would be beside him no matter what. This commitment from her is what gave him the power he needed to fight to get his edge back.
He started buying distressed assets and was able to start building his financial stability back pretty quickly. His company became successful again but that is when he realized he had lost his edge. He was making money again but had no purpose. During what Villacis calls his discovery journey, he started studying and learning about personal development and started implementing many new habits which completely changed his life. He started teaching his friends about these things and several of them told him what he was teaching was pure gold. It was that moment when Villacis had finally rediscovered his edge. He realized his purpose was to help other men regain their edge too and he knew he had to make his health and fitness a priority.
Health Is Wealth Whether You Believe It Or Not
Life comes at you fast and many men have lost their edge by allowing themselves to fall victim to a softening society. Villacis says historically men have been the leaders of their family and their prime instinct has been to provide and protect. But as society has softened its stance on obesity and has started embracing the ‘Dad Bod,’ it has become increasingly acceptable for men to pursue wealth and prioritize family over taking care of their own health and fitness. Villacis says this is exactly what happened to him during his discovery journey. In his mind he was planning to wait until he was a billionaire before he would actually address his health and fitness.
After his mindset shifted, he finally made the decision to hire a personal trainer once he realized how important his health and fitness really were. Villacis says he was wearing a suit when the trainer came over for the first time and the trainer asked if he was going to work out in the suit. Villacis told him he was just going to interview him and the trainer told Villacis he was actually there to interview him. The trainer said they could either talk about working out or actually make it happen. Villacis immediately changed clothes and started following the trainer’s workout and within 15 minutes he was exhausted. It was that very moment when he realized 15 minutes of exercise each day would be exactly what he needed to get his fitness back in order. He says all the excuses went out the window because he knew he could make time for 15 minutes of exercise each day.
The Morning Ritual
Villacis is a huge believer in his morning ritual and this is one of the most powerful things he teaches. He firmly believes a fully customized morning routine can allow you to conquer anything. His routine starts with meditation, a 15-minute workout and taking care of his business all within the first 90 minutes he is awake. He says instead of being reactive about his day he is extremely proactive which has helped him tremendously.
Villacis says that during his discovery journey he was in a lot of pain and decided to do a lot of research on NLP, hypnosis and meditation and realized that most people’s thoughts are 80% negative and are mostly based off of past experiences. Through his research he was able to discover a way that creates a pattern interrupt which helps you reset your subconscious mind and have more brain capacity. Villacis says he has been following his morning ritual which prioritizes his health and fitness now for almost a decade and it has been an integral part of his success.
